The control of radioactivity in water intended for human consumption is regulated by Royal Decrees 3/2023 and 314/2016. These regulations establish the parameters to be determined in drinking water:
- Total alpha and beta residual activity indices
- Tritium and radon activity
- Total Indicative Dose (TID)
At URAIS all these tests are included within the scope of accreditation of the laboratory according to ISO 17025:2005 since 2006 (accreditation no. 518/LE970):
- Basic pack: Total alpha, total beta and beta residual activity index
- Basic pack + Tritium and/or Radon
If these parameters do not exceed their parametric values, the water is considered potable since the total indicative dose (TID) is less than 0.1 mSv/year. In the event that the parametric value is exceeded for some or all of these parameters, it will be necessary to carry out complementary tests ("Packs A and/or B"), which we also carry out at URAIS, to assess that the DIT value is less than 0.1 mSv/year following the following scheme:
