URAIS was created in 2001 thanks to the establishment of an agreement between the URV and the Tarragona Water Consortium (CAT) through the Rovira i Virgili University Foundation (FURV) to provide radioactivity analysis services in the water distributed to its members. The laboratory was located between 2001 and 2007 in the building of the Center for Technology Transfer and Innovation (CTTi) of the Rovira i Virgili University, but since the end of 2007, thanks to the signing of an integration agreement with the CAT, the laboratory has been moved to the Water Quality Laboratory (LQAIGUA) of the Tarragona Water Consortium's Drinking Water Treatment Plant in L'Ampolla.
From its creation to the present, URAIS has been increasing its technical capacity until reaching quality levels that allowed the laboratory to obtain accreditation by ENAC according to the ISO 17025 standard in 2006.
At the same time, URAIS has developed a continuous research activity in the field of environmental radioactivity, which has led to the completion of several doctoral theses and a continuous scientific production in international journals.
